After our recent roadtrip to Portland, Oregon, I found myself wanting more space than my current 256MB SD card could offer. I went to Buy.com and found a SanDisk 1GB SD card for $135.99 (plus tax, since I live in California). More importantly, if you click this link, you’ll get a 10% discount from the card, which subtracts about $13 from the price! Now, I’ll be able to fit more maps and routes on my HP iPAQ H5450 Pocket PC, using PocketMap Navigator. Woo hoo!
I just found out about two apps that let you backup data from your Windows or Mac computer to miniDV tape! I’d always wondered if such software existed, and it does! I’m pretty sure these apps have been out for a while now, and I’m considering buying the Windows one. Details:
The software is nearly priced the same with both companies (between $40-60 for full versions).
Earlier this week, I signed up for a Vonage SoftPhone account (see the SoftPhone info on the main page) and got myself hooked up with a Portland area number. I’ve tried it on my Acer TravelMate C303xmi Tablet PC, and it works pretty well with the integrated mic and speakers. It’s definitely better to use a headset. I prefer using my Jabra BT200 instead of a corded headset. The cost of the SoftPhone account is $4.99/month (includes 500 minutes a month), with a $9.99 one-time activation fee. We’re still loving the regular Vonage service which uses a hardware device connected to our network hub at home. Our home network is connected to a Covad TeleSpeed DSL line, which is 1.5Mbps SDSL.
Building your own custom removable drive
It seems a lot of my friends are more aware of the importance of backing up their data, as I’m getting more requests for my recommendations of drive/external case combos. My most recent recommendations to my long-time friend and former Disney animator, Sean Ramirez:
Seagate 200GB drive (nice 3 year warranty, not something you find with some drives these days)
CP Technologies 3.5” HD Aluminum Case Enclosure (very slim design, recently bought this case for the internal drive of a failed EZQuest Cobra case/power supply)
SIGGRAPH 2004: Web Graphics presentation by Schematic
Today, Matthew Rechs and I presented in the Media session of the Web Graphics program at SIGGRAPH 2004 in Los Angeles, CA. My portion of the presentation explained how XML can be used for stand-alone Flash presentations, showcasing our presentation engine. You can find our session notes at:

Today, Troy Gardner, a co-worker from Schematic, is presenting his talk entitled “A Graphical Query Interface for Blogs and Wikis”.
Edmund Teske “Spirit of the Matter” at Getty Center
Last night we took Snow’s brother, Cap, and his girfriend to see the Getty Center. One of the current exhibitions was “Spirit of the Matter”, a collection of Los Angeles’ artist/photographer Edmund Teske (1911-1996). If you’ve seen a lot of black and white photography produced during the mid 1900’s, you might think that you’ve seen the same style in other photographers’ work from the same period. Teske’s early work featured several beautiful duotone “Sabattier-effect” pieces, one of my favorites being a picture of tree grain. It was also nice to see several Los Angeles locations that I hadn’t seen before in photographs (places also that I have yet to visit). You can see more of the work at:

Today, I learned about a new open source installer tool called Nullsoft Scriptable Install System. I haven’t had a lot of time to look into it, but if you need to provide an installer for your Flash projectors, screensavers, or whatever, you might want to check it out:
Shane Elliott as “First Robber” on Monk!
Tonight, friend and former co-worker Shane Elliott starred on his first episode of Monk on the USA Network. The episode was called “Monk and the Employee of the Month.” Shane did a great job playing a scuzzy looking dude. Congrats Shane!
